. The Honorable Steve Symms, former United States Senator from Idaho, was born in Nampa, Idaho, on April 23, 1938. A graduate of Caldwell High School, Steve earned a Bachelor of Science Agricultural degree from the University of Idaho. After serving three years in the United States Marine Corps, Steve returned to the Symms Fruit Ranch, Inc., his family's business in Caldwell, Idaho.
A political unknown in 1972, Steve ran for and won a seat in the United States House of Representatives. In 1980, Congressman Symms won election to the Senate upsetting a long-term incumbent and was re-elected in 1986.
Before his January 1993 retirement from the United States Senate, Steve served on the Budget, Finance, Armed Services, Environment and Public Works and joint Economic Committees.
During his years of public service, Steve Symms was selected to receive the U.S. Marine Corps "Iron Mike" award and the National Guard's "Minuteman of the Year" award, in addition to awards from such groups as the national Federation of Independent Business, the Freedom Foundation, the American Security Council, the Watchdog of the Treasury, Americans for Constitutional Action and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.
Upon his retirement, Senator Symms formed his own consulting firm, Symms, Lehn Associates, Inc. In January of 1999 he and John Haddow formed Symms & Haddow Associates. In January of 2001, Steve and John joined forces with Parry, Romani & DeConcini to form Parry, Romani, DeConcini & Symms.
Steve and his wife, Loretta, reside in Northern Virginia.
